WakeSMART in Educational Organizations 2024
School Districts have long been interested in computer-power management as a low-impact means of reducing electric bills and improving their overall sustainability. Raptor technical’s WakeSMART was built based on 20 years of input from customers and partners. It is the state-of-the-art means of reducing computer energy waste while helping IT departments to more effectively manage large computer fleets. This case-study highlights two examples from different areas with varying requirements.
EVALUATION PROCESS
It is always preferable for customers to take advantage of Raptor Technical’s standing offer of evaluating WakeSMART prior to purchasing. This helps to give the organization a better forecast of the energy savings opportunity and allows IT departments to confirm that WakeSMART works well in their technical environment. Moreover, IT often discovers that WakeSMART will provide them with many benefits in the administration of their computer fleets.
MEDIUM SCHOOL DISTRICT
This example is a 10-school district in New York. The project was part of a larger ESCO energy-efficiency project.
An audit was first done with the district in 2021 and the project was approved and installed in 2022. The forecasted savings were good and the functionality of WakeSMART was interesting to IT, so they moved forward with the purchase of 3248 licenses and their installation. The district has reduced PC energy consumption by 34%, or 99 kWh/computer, over their mix of laptop and desktop computers. Their expected payback is less than 13 months.
SMALL SCHOOL DISTRICT
Our second example district has 6 schools in New York. As part of a broader energy-efficiency initiative with an energy service company (ESCO), the district purchased 2500 Verdiem Surveyor licenses to manage the energy consumption of district computers.
In 2023 their pre-purchased support contract expired and they were open to reviewing options to Surveyor Software. They reviewed their options and were impressed with WakeSMART’s ability to match or exceed Surveyor’s energy-efficiency features while providing them with better device tracking, portable device management and SCCM integration. Because WakeSMART is cloud-hosted, installation and ongoing maintenance are far easier. They are still working with the ESCO, who are delighted that computer-power savings will be continued and increased.
WakeSMART was installed before the end of the 2022/23 school year. The district has reduced computer energy consumption by 15% and should pay for its new WakeSMART subscription in about 5 months. Savings will increase further as policies are adjusted.
